Babies & Miscarriages & God
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” Matthew 28:19.
Most of our friends have started having babies. Everyone in my close-knit group is pregnant-- and by everyone I mean everyone (minus myself and my one dear friend "V").
While throwing baby showers for the other girls in the group, V and her husband had been trying to get pregnant for over a year. Then, a month ago, V had a miscarriage. We were all just heartbroken for her.
A week after that, V and I met for coffee. She told me how thankful she was that she knew her purpose: to bring glory and honor to God by making disciples.
I was SO taken aback. Her perspective in this hard time somehow managed to be God-honoring. Our purpose is not defined by whether or not we get married, buy a house, find a successful job, or produce children. God wants our hearts! He wants us to lead others to Him and in anything and everything, bringing glory and honor to Him our Lord and Savior.
Satan is sneaky. He will try to deceive us to believing there are other things more important to focus on right now, like moving into the next life-stage with all our friends. He will tell you that you would be so happy if only you had a baby. But when we put our trust and hope in those other things we will always be disappointed. When we devote ourselves to God's bigger purpose we find true and FULL fulfillment.
Lord, what is standing in the way of serving you today? God, you are so much bigger than our insecurities and our life-stage “accomplishments.” Give me the strength to point others to you.
