Don't Stop Rejoicing

“I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God” Ecclesiastes 3: 12-13.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped rejoicing over the little things. I wouldn't let myself get excited over possibilities for the fear of disappointment. I was living as if jubilee was going extinct, and I better save it for when the really important stuff in life happens. But I think I've finally figured out that it's just not worth the wait.

We need to celebrate the small things, right now, while they're happening. You might not have gotten the job, but you got the interview! The first date was a bust, but you took a chance! You don't have the degree yet, but you passed the class! In my attempt to protect myself I've robbed myself of years of encouragement, affirmation and celebration.

If I want my life to point others to Jesus, I need to start looking more like him. And I'm pretty sure that means a lot more joy and a lot less waiting. Good things are happening right now, in this moment, so I've decided I'm going to act like it.

Jesus, thank you for the little things. Help me celebrate the smallest accomplishments in my life and in others.
