Reminder: God Will Provide

“Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!” Luke 12:24.

I cringed as the cashier rang up my groceries. $13 for chicken breasts?  $5 for asparagus? Who knew trying to eat healthy could be so expensive? I nearly shed a tear as the total for one week’s worth of food for my husband and me came out to $183. I grabbed the bags and headed toward my car, mentally making note of all the things I’d have to cut back on now that we’re trying to buy healthier food. No more daily trips for coffee. No more eating out several times a week. What’s next? No more fro-yo Fridays?

I was so consumed by my woe-is-me thoughts that I almost bumped into a man standing near my car. He was hunched over, covered in rags, sifting through a trash can for food. There I was, upset about having to cut back on lattes and frozen desserts, while another person was digging through garbage to find something to eat. For all I knew, it could have been his first meal of the day. And by that time, I’d already had breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner and dessert.

We’re so quick to complain about things that others would count as blessings. I think that’s why sometimes, when we need it most, God puts the simplest reminders right before our eyes to let us know when we’re being ridiculous and ungrateful. It’s his subtle way of smacking us upside the head to remind us that he has, and always will, provide for us. I wish I didn’t need so many reminders, but I’m thankful he’s always there to give them.

God, thank you for always providing me with the funds to buy food. Please continue to open my eyes to real sacrifice and help me to recognize and appreciate the amazing blessings you’ve bestowed upon me. Don’t ever stop reminding me of when I’m being ridiculous and ungrateful.
