Whatever You Do: Work Heartily

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” Colossians 3:23.

Imagine if we could accomplish the verse above. The concept of doing everything for the Lord, not for ourselves or each other. It says whatever you do. Not, if you’re working for a non-profit, or if you’re a missionary.

Think of all those jobs I sat in being miserable, just biding my time until a better and more meaningful job came along. There's a yearning to go back and do whatever I was doing as if it were for God himself. I want to shake 19-year-old Sarah working at a pizza shop and being rude to her co-workers. “Be nice! Be kind. Be gentle. Show love and mercy. Use this pointless position for some good in this harsh world. Turn the mundane into something wonderful.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 takes it a step further, saying: “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Instead of mindlessly eating until I feel nauseous, or having too many drinks with friends and feeling gross the next day, I can take care of my actions for the glory of God. I can thank Him for the wonder of the food he has provided and the nourishment of this healthy body he has given me, praising Him by enjoying each bite... and not getting carried away.

I can worship my creator with even the smallest choices I make by appreciating this gift of life. I’m aware that this sounds a little crazy, a little too extreme, but wouldn’t it be beautiful?

God, help me to be more aware of what I do with my body, why I’m doing whatever it is I’m doing, and how I can love others better. I want my life to be a song of praise to you- each action an intentional note to your greater glory.
