Your Scars Are Beautiful

“Jesus said, ‘This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory, so that God’s Son may be glorified through it’” John 11:4.

I have always loved scars and the stories that can go with them. I love that someone can see a scar on your body and ask you “Where did you get THAT one?” Scars are things that stay with us, forcing us to look back and see where we were and how far God has brought us.

I will never forget the time I was on the night shift at the boarding school I worked at, and I had to deal with a crazy momma cat that had gotten out of her cage. I was chasing that cat all over the dorm, trying to stay quiet enough so everyone could sleep, and failing miserably at catching it. That rotten little feline scratched my face and arms and hands up so badly! The only scratch deep enough to scar was on the back of my hand. I can still look down at the back of my hand and see the tiny scar left there. It makes me smile. It reminds me of that season of my life. It makes me think of all the girls that I worked with. It is a permanent reminder of who I was and what I was doing. And shows me how far God has brought me.

A scar is left after something that has been broken, is then healed, whether that’s your skin from a cat scratch or your heart from a failed relationship. What scars do you carry with you and what are their stories? How can you see God through your scars today?

God, thank you for the scars that have been left on my body and the scars left on my heart, because they show that you are the ultimate healer! Allow me to share the stories of your love, grace and healing with the world.
